The second book in the Climax Collection series provides pictures of windmills with captions that give an insight into the songs windmills may be singing when we are not around.

The Climax Collection 2: The Secret Lives Of Windmills follows on the success of the first book in the series. Like its predecessor, it’s hard to categorise, as it combines elements of coffee-table photography, a bit of music history, and even a gentle armchair tour around some of South Africa’s back roads, because the photos have captions, showing where the windmills were found.

Quality photos of that well-loved South African icon, the windmill, combined with sing-along song titles, give it an amusing and unexpected twist. All this makes it the perfect gift for anyone who loves windmills, and is especially ideal for the man who is hard to shop for.

A visual celebration of this land of contrasts, with a culture and architecture that goes back many thousands of years.

Description

Arising from Travels Abroad, is the Postcards from Abroad Series. Travels Abroad is essentially a chatty travel journal, crammed full of colour photos. But there were other lovely black-and-white photos from those trips, which didn’t fit into the format of that book. This gave rise to four companion books, including this one, Postcards From Jordan: A visual celebration, in black-and-white, of this land of contrasts.

Max and Sue Hoppe have been married for four decades, and as long as either can remember, Petra in Jordan has been high on both of their bucket lists. So when they were planning their second visit to The Emirates in 2015, they decided to see if it would be possible to go there. Imagine their delight, when it turned out to be cheaper to fly Cape Town-Amman-Dubai return than Jo’burg-Dubai direct! The full journey is covered in Travels Abroad.

But through these beautiful black-and-white images you will :

Wander the bustling streets of old Downtown Amman

Discover Jordan’s famous confectionery

Take an early morning bus to picturesque Wadi Musa

Walk in breathless awe through Little Petra and Petra itself
Ride horses and camels through ancient rock clefts

Explore Wadi Rum, the beautiful desert area with spectacular rock outcrops

Sleep over in the desert, in a Bedouin tent

Visit Madaba, known for its historic mosaics and churches

Look over the Jordan Rift Valley, from Mount Nebo

Swim in the Dead Sea

Explore the ancient ruins on the Citadel in Amman

Jordan is a delightful, friendly country, with many layers of culture, a place to enjoy ancient history and modern development, and a place that beckons visitors to return regularly!

Enjoy the journeys!

A visual celebration of a nation that has shown unprecedented growth and modernity, but which still values the ancient ways.

Arising from Travels Abroad, is the Postcards from Abroad Series. Travels Abroad is essentially a chatty travel journal, crammed full of colour photos. But there were other lovely black-and-white photos from those trips, which didn’t fit into the format of that book. This gave rise to four companion books, including this one, Postcards From The U.A.E: A visual celebration, in black-and-white, of this land of rapid growth.

In December 2013 and 2015, Max and Sue Hoppe visited their son, daughter-in-law and two granddaughters in Dubai, To be honest, it was not a place they fancied visiting, and only a strong desire to see the family prompted them to go there. They perceived it to be a paradise for those who like bling, fake snow and designer shopping, none of which held any appeal for them. They would prefer a tent under a bush, in the back-of-beyond, to a five-star hotel in a busy city. As it turned out, they experienced both!

Luckily, their kids have discovered a completely different side to the Emirates than the one usually seen by tourists, and were delighted to share this with them.

These “postcards” show some lesser-known but wonderful aspects of the Emirates, such as:

Riding Arabian horses through the dunes at sunrise and sunset

Exploring the forbidding Al Hajar Mountains at Ras-al-Khaimah in Fujairah

Watching racing camels being trained at sunrise

Visiting the art and museum hub of Sharjah

Watching a humane and entertaining style of bull fighting in Fujairah

Exploring ancient mud-built mosques and forts in the desert

Taking a water-taxi over the Creek in Bur Dubai, the old city

Seeing how traditional Arabian architecture integrates into modern buildings, and yes, a visit to the Jumeira Palm and Burj Khalifa.

A visit to a haunted fishing village at sunset

Buying Pakistani bread, made to order in a tandoor oven

A road-trip covering 5 of the 7 Emirates in one afternoon

These lovely black-and-white images will fill you with a desire to look beyond the surface, in this fascinating part of the world!

A visual celebration of this ancient yet modern land, showing its many layers of civilisations and cultures.

Arising from Travels Abroad, is the Postcards from Abroad Series. Travels Abroad is essentially a chatty travel journal, crammed full of colour photos. But there were other lovely black-and-white photos from those trips, which didn’t fit into the format of that book. This gave rise to four companion books, including this one, Postcards From The Turkey: A visual celebration, in black-and-white, of this ancient land of layered civilisations.

When Max and Sue Hoppe visited Bulgaria in 2009 and 2011, they were delighted to discover that the closest airport, to the village where their family lived, was Istanbul, just a three-hour drive away. Turkey had been high on their bucket lists for many years. They used these opportunities to do some exploring and immediately fell in love with this fascinating, friendly, exotic and cosmopolitan country.

Through these “postcards” you’ll:

wander through ancient Sultanahmet, the old heart of Istanbul

overlook the Sea of Marmara, the Bosporus and the Golden Horn, bustling waterways

wonder at the lovely Haggia Sofia and the Blue Mosque

take a tram to historic Taksim and Galata, with its Medieval tower offering 360 degree views

discover the hidden gem of the Basilica Cistern

enjoy a variety of street food

take an overnight bus to incredible Pammukkale, a hillside covered in white travertine

Wander through the ancient Greek city, Hierapolis of Phrygia

Swim in a hot-spring littered with ancient carved pillars

Travel to Cappadocia, to explore incredible rock formations

Stay in a hotel room which is an old cave, carved out of rock

Explore underground cities and churches

And the cherry on top, take a hot air balloon ride over ‘love valley.’

All this just scratches the surface of the treasures Turkey has to offer.

A visual celebration of this fascinating country, embracing the ancient architecture and its transition into modern world.

Arising from Travels Abroad, is the Postcards from Abroad Series. Travels Abroad is essentially a chatty travel journal, crammed full of colour photos. But there were other lovely black-and-white photos from those trips, which didn’t fit into the format of that book. This gave rise to four companion books, including this one, Postcards From Bulgaria: A visual celebration, in black-and-white, of this land of ancient civilisations and fresh beginnings.

In July 2009, Max and Sue Hoppe went to Bulgaria, and Sue returned there in April 2011.

Bulgaria is one of those places that, when people hear you are going there, invariably prompts them to ask in mystified tones, “Why Bulgaria?” Max and Sue have bucket lists which would take several lifetimes and lottery wins to fulfil, but this former communist block country hadn’t even made it onto the bottom of their lists. They wouldn’t have chosen to go there, if it wasn’t for seeing their kids and grand-daughters, who were living there at the time. It proved to be a pleasant surprise, a charming country full of ancient history and delightful contradictions.

In these “postcards” you’ll:

experience something of village life, which feels like stepping back in time.

go on a road trip to the Balkans

explore Plovdiv, the second largest city in Bulgaria, a fascinating mix of ancient, communist era austerity and modern growth.

see street art, old monuments and modern graffiti.

visit ancient fortresses and small towns, an ancient seaport and a medieval craft village

walk through deciduous forests and along winding riverbanks.

meet a variety of delightful village characters, and their animals.

By the time these beautiful black-and-white images have revealed the true Bulgaria, you will be longing to visit.

Enjoy the journey!

Max and Sue Hoppe love to travel in their somewhat unreliable 4x4, named Koos ( you'll find out why, in the intro to the book) seeing intriguing things and meeting fascinating people along the way. A great travel book, full of interesting anecdotes and photos, that takes you on a trip around the country on some of the less travelled routes.

This book offers a gentle armchair tour, which generally avoids the main roads. It is sure to appeal to those with a love of travel, exploration, wildlife, and particularly an appreciation of all that makes this part of the world unique and special.

It is part travel-journal, detailing routes, adventures, & escapades (always made unpredictable by Koos’ erratic behaviour) & part coffee-table photography. It is also part travel-guide, with informative maps & info, although it is intended more as a means of sharing their impressions of the places they pass through, on random, haphazard journeys, than as a definitive guide to the places covered.

In Travels Troubles With Koos, you’ll meet the travelers, and we’ll explore some wonderful destinations together:

Meet lions and elephants in Addo Elephant National Park

Get to know some of the enchanting smaller residents of the park, and see the varied and lovely scenery

Travel via Zuurberg Pass to the Mountain Zebra National Park, and camp there over a rainy Easter weekend

Return via Somerset East and Port St Francis

Go on a crazy girls-only adventure to Lesotho, getting lost on top of Katberg Pass en route!

Spend a fun weekend with a bunch of photographers at Addo Palace Bush Lodge

Camp in Tankwa Karoo and Namaqualand during a spring cold snap.

Meander to Cape Town, discovering all sorts of fascinating spots and people along the way.

Also available in Afrikaans, as Padlangs Probleme Met Koos.
